Subscribe to Updates. Life Story for Jacqueline R. My nana always spoke so very highly of everyone here, her FL family. I find comfort in the fact that she was part of such a wonderful community, and will live on in the memories of such kind people. She touched the hearts of so many up and down the east coast—young, old, and in between. By and large she was known for her buoyant personality, her charisma, tenacity, optimism and smile.

I would like to share a poem I wrote in memory of my Nana before I continue. But Nana, where do I go, who will I be? These are the things you taught to me. Know how to work as part of a team, And no matter what, you follow your dreams. Have you exercised today or are you being a slug?

Always show up for her chicken cutlets, supper any time, But steer clear of her baked goods; they should have been a crime. You get what you give and life is a stage, So be kind, dress nice, and have fun regardless of your age. I have always considered my nana my role model, but that barely begins to capture what she truly meant to me. Since day one she was my cheerleader, my counselor, my mentor, my friend.

She was my hero, or should I say my heroin. She had a love for life that is hard to match, and never wavered when confronted by challenges or the ambiguity of the future.

The unknown was not something that she backed away from, but rather embraced. Even at times when we feel vulnerable or adrift, all we can do is hold our heads high, make a plan, and march our little fannies into the future with patience and determination.

As many of you know, my Nana was a fighter, and this was not a newfound quality of hers. At twenty years old, she gave birth to my mother, and soon put the lesson that I hold so dear into practice.

But I know how precious those times were, to both my mother and my nana. Teaching was her passion. One of her only true loves. Something that drove her absolutely crazy was seeing students with loads of potential who refused to apply themselves. But she had a way of lighting a fire within these kids, whether she knew it or not.

She practiced the philosophy of tough love, but was also compassionate. She inspired kids with her strict yet brutally honest words of wisdom. Remember me?! But I loved that they knew her. And wanted to thank her. My heart would swell with pride and happiness that I was her granddaughter. At times, I was certainly amongst these kids who drove her crazy, but she never gave up on me. I would not be where I am today without her gentle prodding Okay, usually it was not so gentle.

She guided me through the college application process when I was consumed by my late-teen-rebellion stage, and would lighten up the endless paper-writing process throughout college with goofy, motivational greeting cards. Her career in education began long before I bore witness to it in NH. Upon their move to Tamworth NH, she decided it was too soon to part with her sustained career and became the Vice Principal at the high school I would later attend, Kennett High School.

She carried the high standards she always had held with her into the North Country, and the region watched as she took a deteriorating school system and turned it right around. Kennett saw more positive change in her four years there than it ever had previous to her arrival or after she left. Even after she retired, she stayed involved at the high school, substituting as much as she could. I loved the days when I would walk into a class and realize she was my substitute.

I also loved that all of my peers knew Mrs. Whyte in class today? There was never a time I heard this story and did not get the goose bumps. My grampy Pete is the only grandfather I have ever known, and I am blessed to have such a colorful and magnificent man in my life. My nana and grampy knew each other in junior high school. They dated, which back in those days, meant holding hands and sharing a soda pop on the beach.
