The DragonForce guitarist told us that he was already 16 when he picked up a guitar for the very first time. A few years later he started DragonForce with Sam: "We wanted to do something with melodic singing — something catchy and melodic", he told us.
When he started to play, Herman listened a lot to rock guitar players like Bon Jovi. Later on Metallica, Megadeth and Dream Theater have been very influential. That's the music we enjoyed listening to". Sam and Herman have different approaches for writing lead lines at DragonForce.
Sam works every single solo out. Which of your solos on the album is your favorite? The title almost says it all! Has this in any way correlated to an increase in concert attendance, or fan interactions or streams or downloads? It has definitely brought new fans to the band. What made you want to play Ibanez guitars over other brands? Do you like to play Super Smash Bros. Is it true that you invited popular YouTuber Stevie T [guitarist Steve Terreberry] to play the triangle on tour with you?
How do you rate him as a guitarist? And how do you feel YouTube celebrity guitarists in general? Unfortunately, he pulled out two weeks before the tour. The whole YouTube world is very different from the live stage. Making interesting content is a great skill. Stevie is a really good guitar player. But he has some great videos and he can make a lot of people smile. Apart from that, I think the main modification I've put in is really in the rack. I built a brand new rack for this tour, I thought my setup was going to get smaller but it's gotten bigger again.
Herman : Well the rack is now a video, audio and guitar combination rack. Synchronization between the Kemper, sequencer, video synchronization on the stage because we have a massive LED screen on this tour. So to synchronize all the visual, the guitar, the effects, all in time with each other I had to build a brand new rack. Also to sync the arcade machines we have on stage, they wanted all different things so it took me two days to re-rack everything with the new wireless system.
Due to the changing frequencies, I had to throw away all the old wireless system and get new ones because of the way the frequencies are changing. In terms of the video aspect of things is this purely what appears on the screen? Herman : We synchronize everything to the back screen but the arcade machines run different content so I need to program in advance at which point during the guitar solo the video is going to change.
It takes a really long time to program. As a guitar player first you just concentrate on the playing but later on you're thinking more about the show itself, so thinking about sound cards, video stuff, about projection, all of the things to make the visual experience of the show better. It makes the solo sound better when it looks good! I've got the Kemper running and they profiled my old rack sound with the new effects, you know Kemper has much better effects than my old rack.
So I've updated it, it's still got that classic shredder, metal guitar sound but it's cleaner. It sounds really nice now actually after profiling it.
The profiling actually made it a lot smoother weirdly enough! Herman : Yeah I'm still using one, it's the Weeping Demon wah, the big one I think it's discontinued now. So I don't have to switch it on and off as there's no time when you're playing at bpm to switch it on and off.
It's on a parallel loop so it's only in the signal chain when I'm playing it. Herman : I'm not using it on this tour because we're not playing the songs. I kinda messed up my rack because I didn't put it in. You know you should put everything you need for every single song but I didn't have time!
Once we change the setlist I'll bring it back out. Okay so now for some more general, guitar-related questions. What was your first guitar? Nevertheless, he continued playing. At around , when Herman performed a " dive bomb " effect, the croud noticed the guitars strings to have actually "bent" into the top 20 frets. The croud suspected they were just seeing things, but by around , the bend had become bigger, and Herman's own hair started getting sucked into what seemed to be, -quote- "A mini vortex of awesomeness " As the solo continued, the hole got larger and larger, but the headbanging got stronger and stronger, until a little child was actually sucked out of his mothers arms and launched into the hole.
Other uses of the word " Herman Li" can be used as following -"I just so Herman Li'ed the song" Meaning you hit absolutely every note in a Dragonforce song while being drunk. The word Herman Li cannot be used by many, as it is almost impossible to play anywhere near half as fast and good as him.
Guitarist in the power metal band Dragonforce. He was born in Hong Kong and is the person who started Dragonforce. Herman Li is a self-taught with the guitar and is extremely fast.
Although Herman Li is left-handed, he uses a right handed guitar; Li is known for his amazing signature guitar solos, where he switches his hands right hand for fretting and left for "shredding.
Herman Li is one of the best guitarists that I have ever heard. His solos are amazing. Some shred-head who plays in dragonForce along with fellow guitarist Sam Totman. Neither guitar player can actually pull off the songs live and when you listen to their studio work the guitars wreak of protools , That is why i call them studioforce. They use the studio to make it seem like they have talent but live they simply can't deliver.
